About the Project

“The Teaching Collection” is Series Two of Book by Book, a video series dedicated to unpacking my library.

In Series Two, we delve into my teaching collection, offering an academically curated glimpse into a repository of historical treasures that have been integral to my educational endeavors. This series unveils rare books, vintage newspapers, and intriguing ephemera that serve as primary sources and teaching aids in some my courses. This series provides a unique visual journey through these items, presenting images from selected materials that allow for close examination and appreciation of their details. Without the intrusion of commentary, the artifacts are given the space to communicate their own stories, inviting viewers to engage with them directly and draw their own insights and conclusions. This approach emphasizes the inherent value and significance of the materials, encouraging an immersive and contemplative experience.

The rare books featured in this series span various genres and time periods, offering a window into the intellectual and cultural currents of their respective eras. From early printed works that showcase the evolution of the printing press and craftsmanship of the making process to first editions of seminal texts, these books provide invaluable insights into the historical development of ideas and knowledge. The vintage newspapers included in the collection serve as powerful snapshots of historical moments, capturing the immediacy and impact of events as they unfolded. These periodicals offer a rich tapestry of social, political, and economic history, allowing viewers to explore contemporary reactions and reportage. And the ephemera—including almanacs, chapbooks, and pamphlets—add another layer of depth to the collection. These often-overlooked items provide glimpses into the everyday lives and concerns of people from the past, revealing the ephemeral yet poignant nature of historical documentation.

By presenting these artifacts without commentary, “The Teaching Collection” encourages viewers to engage in their own critical analysis and interpretation. This series aligns with pedagogical approaches that prioritize primary source analysis and active learning, fostering a deeper understanding of historical inquiry and appreciation for the material culture of the past. Through this visually rich and thoughtfully curated series, “The Teaching Collection” offers but a brief glimpse of items in my collection and invites scholars, students, and history enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the past and explore the profound connections between historical artifacts and the narratives they embody.
